Many Parties, One Ultimate Leader: Revolution
The New Joint Endeavor for Welfare, Education, and Liberation (JEWEL) Movement, having predominantly Marxist-leftist principles, was founded on March 11, 1973 by Maurice Bishop. Following this, a struggle between democracy and communism began in Grenada. This revolution was won by the New JEWEL Movement in 1979 with its head, Maurice Bishop, taking control of the government as prime minister. Essentially, the New JEWEL Movement would stay in power until American forces intervened in October of 1983.
